Boeing Sells Record $53 Billion in Commercial Aircraft

Woodrow Bellamy III
[Aviation Today January 29, 2014] Boeing reported a record $53 billion in sales for its commercial airframes for 2013, driven by higher production and delivery rates of its workhorse 737 family aircraft. Revenue for this year is projected to increase even further, with a range from $87.5 billion to $90.5 billion.

Despite suffering a hit to its reputation with the four-month-long grounding of the worldwide 787 Dreamliner fleet, 2013 proved to be a historic year for the North American airframe manufacturer. The record $53 billion in sales of commercial aircraft was an 8 percent increase from the previous year and the order backlog increased to 5,080 airplanes, valued at $374 billion.

"Our commercial airplanes business accelerated delivery of its record backlog by successfully increasing production rates while also achieving important development milestones on the 737 MAX and 787-9 and launching the new 787-10 and 777X models with an unprecedented customer response," said Jim McNerney, CEO of Boeing

Total revenue for Boeing, including its defense and other divisions, increased 6 percent to $86.6 billion, also a record for the company.

The company is now producing its 737 at 38 per month, and garnered nearly 1,800 firm orders for the re-engined 737 MAX which is scheduled to enter into service in 2017 with launch customer Southwest Airlines.

In 2014, Boeing is projecting deliveries of up to 725 aircraft, which would be a 12 percent increase over 2013. The delivery projection includes a full year of production of the 787 at 10 per month, and an increase in 737 production, from 38 to 42 per month.
