'US will continue to offer help'



MH370: Obama says America committed to providing its expertise in search for missing aircraft

PUTRAJAYA: THE United States will continue to provide Malaysia with search and investigation assistance   to locate missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, said President Barack Obama.
Obama said since the beginning of the tragedy, the US authorities had been working closely with their Malaysian counterparts, and he was personally in consultation with his team on the matter.
"I can tell you that the US is absolutely committed in providing whatever resources and assets that we can, and that the Malaysian government is very welcoming of the assistance."
Acknowledging that the search operation was challenging and required enormous efforts, he said the Malaysian authorities were working tirelessly to find the aircraft.
"I can't speak for all the countries in the region but I can say that the US and other partners have found the Malaysian government eager for assistance, and fully forthcoming with us in terms of the information that they have," he said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at Seri Perdana here yesterday.
In conveying his condolences on behalf of the American people to the families and friends of those aboard the ill-fated aircraft, Obama said he completely understood the heartache of the families were going through.
"They want answers and there should be full transparency, in terms of what we know and what we don't know, and how the process is proceeding."
He said it was not an easy task to locate the plane and noted that scouring the huge Indian Ocean was challenging and required laborious efforts, which would take time.
"Obviously, we don't know all the details of what happened but we do know that, if in fact the plane had gone down in the ocean in this part of the world, that is a big place and it is a very challenging and laborious effort that's going to take quite some time."
Earlier, Najib, in expressing his gratitude to the president for US help in the search, said Malaysia was grateful for its unwavering support.
He said the support received from the US showed the strong ties and cooperation between both countries.
"Over the past two months, the strength of our relationship has been revealed for all to see," he said, adding that from the day MH370 went missing, the US had lent its considerable expertise to the investigation and its capabilities and assets to the search effort.
"We are grateful to you for standing by Malaysia in our hour of need."
