Royal Air Force Luqa was a Royal Air Force station located on the island of Malta, now developed into the Malta International Airport.
It was the location of RAF Mediterranean Command headquarters of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Particularly during the Siege of Malta from 1941 to 1943, RAF Luqa was a very important base for British Commonwealth forces fighting against Italy and Germany for naval control of the Mediterranean and for ground control of North Africa. Air combat over and near Malta was some of the most ferocious of the war, and a series of airfields were built on the small, rocky island: at Luqa, Ta' Qali, and Hal Far, plus satellite fields at Safi, Qrendi and on Malta's second island of Gozo.

Det tomotors flyet styrtet like etter avgang i Luqa, melder Times of Malta.
Maltese authorities have identified the aircraft which crashed at Malta airport as a US-registered Fairchild Merlin IV.
The aircraft (N577MX) is listed by Flight Fleets Analyzer as being operated by CAE Aviation of Luxembourg.
CAE specialises in operations such as aerial surveillance and geophysical surveys.
The accident occurred as the aircraft took off at around 07:20 on 24 October, the airport’s operator states.
None of the five crew members on board survived.
“An investigation is currently ongoing and we are working with all the authorities to provide them with any assistance necessary,” the airport operator adds. The accident has closed the airport’s main runway 13/31.
