Kaman To Keep K-Max Line Open At Least Through 2019
Increased customer interest is spurring Kaman Aerospace to keep its K-1200 K-Max heavy-lift helicopter new production line open until at least 2019, the company announced Wednesday. In 2015 Kaman revealed plans to restart K-Max production with an initial batch of 10 aircraft after shuttering the line in 2003 with just 38 built. The first new-production K-Max made its first flight on May 12, the first of two slated for delivery to China's Lectern Aviation next month for firefighting missions. New-production K-Max helicopters have been ordered by customers in China, North America and Europe.
In April, Kaman announced an additional order for two K-Max from ROTAK Helicopter Services of Anchorage, Alaska, for deliveries expected in 2018. Through the beginning of June, the order book for new-production K-Max stood at eight. Additional relaunch customers announced in 2015 include Rotex Helicopter of Switzerland and Helicopter Express of Chamblee, Georgia. The Rotex helicopter should also deliver in July. The single-seat K-Max features a countra-rotating intermeshing rotor system, can lift up to 6,000 pounds externally, and is powered by a single Honeywell T53 turboshaft flat rated to 1,500 shp (takeoff).
