The plane crashed under unknown circumstances. All three occupants died in the crash.
GPIAAF, the Portuguese accident investigation board, reported that the aircraft was registered in Germany and that the three occupants were German nationals.
The identity of the aircraft has not been officially confirmed, but flight tracking website Flightradar24 shows a German-registered Mooney M20K in the vicinity of the accident location, shortly before fire services received a call of the accident at 15:49.
